Fossils from the Carboniferous Period. Eleven figures showing the remains of specimens of early reptiles, amphibians and tetrapods including Dendrerpeton, Hylonomus, Hylerpeton and Baphetes.
Plate from the monograph Air-breathers of the coal period…of Nova Scotia by J W Dawson (Dawson Brothers, Montreal, 1863). The author stated that: `The photograph inserted in some of the copies, I owe to the kindness of Mr. G.R. Prowse, an amateur artist of this city. It presents an accurate magnified picture of some of the principal remains…’
The composite illustration includes a key to the figures. Also inscribed below: ‘Microscopic Photography of G.R. Prowse, Montreal.’
Sir John William Dawson (1820-1899) Canadian geologist was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1862.
