Description
Head and shoulders portrait of Pierre Varignon inclinded to the left as viewed and looking out to viewer. He wears short wig and is dressed in cassock and bands. Oval in a rectangular frame.
Inscribed ‘PIERRE VARIGNON PROFESSEVR ROYAL DE MATHEMATIQVES. ET MEMBRE DES ACADEMIES ROYALES DES SCIENCES DE FRANCE D’ANGLETERRE, ET DE PRUSSE, NE’ A’CAEN L’AN365. MORT A PARIS LE 22 DEC 1722. Geo Vertue hondini sculp 1725’ and pencilled ‘1714’.
Pierre Varignon was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1714.
