    Half-length portrait of James Watt seated in three-quarter profile to the left and looking out to viewer. He wears short hair and is dressed in regency-style clothing of dark jacket and waistcoat, white shirt and cravat.

    Inscribed ‘T. Griffiths del. Thompson sc. James Watt, Esqr, F.R.S. &c &c.’ and pencilled ‘1785’ on the paper support.

    James Watt was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1785.
