Half-length portrait of Robert Wood in three-quarter profile to the left as viewed, head turned and looking back to viewer. He wears fur trimmed gown over shirt with lace cuffs.
Inscribed ‘THE PORTRAIT OF R. WOOD ESQR. AUTHOR OF THE WELL KNOWN WORKS ON THE ANTIQUITIES OF PALMYRA & BALBECK 156. Ant. Raffaello Mengs. 2.2 1/8 by 2.0’ and pencilled ‘1789’.
