Full-length portrait of Roderick Impey Murchison standing with slight incline to the left as viewed with right arm leaning on carved cabinet with bookshelf behind. He wears regency-style clothes of high collared shirt with dark cravat and double breasted coat, a pair of spectacles hang around his neck.

Sir Roderick Impey Murchison was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1826, he was on the council between 1835 and 1860. He was awarded the Copley Medal in 1849.
