Side view of a reconstruction of the fossilized skeletal remains of a Cretaceous period dinosaur, Triceratops prorsus.
Plate 71 from the book The dinosaurs of North America by Othniel Charles Marsh (Washington, 1896).
The accompanying description states that: ‘This restoration is based mainly on two specimens. One of these is the type of Triceratops prorsus Marsh, in which the skull, lower jaw, and cervical vertebrae are in remarkable preservation…The size, in life, would be about 25 feet in length and 10 feet in height.’
Inscribed above: ‘U.S.GEOLOGICAL SURVEY SIXTEENTH ANNUAL REPORT PART I PL.LXXI.’ Inscribed below: ‘RESTORATION OF TRICERATOPS PRORSUS Marsh. One-fortieth natural size. Cretaceous, Wyoming.’
Othniel Charles Marsh (1831-1899) American palaeontologist and Yale University professor, known for participating in the ‘bone wars’ against Edward Drinker Cope.
