    View of the MS Magga Dan, docked in Butlers Wharf. Members of the Antarctic expedition parties and their families can be seen on the bridge of the ship. Tower Bridge is just visible behind on the right hand side as viewed.

    This photograph was taken on the day the main party for Royal Society International Geophysical Year Antarctic Expedition and the main party of the Commonwealth Trans Antarctic Expedition set sail for Antarctica from Butlers Wharf, London.

    From a set of photographic negatives taken by George Hemmen, former Expedition’s Officer for the Royal Society and who was originally appointed as Stores Officer by the Falkland Island Dependencies Survey (FIDS) to organise the International Geophysical Year Antarctic Expedition on behalf of the Royal Society.
