    Zoological study of an adult female Bearded seal Erignathus barbatus (here styled Phoca barbata). Side view, presented on an ice floe, with an inset detail of milk glands.

    Friedrich August Ludwig Thienemann (1793-1858) German physician and ornithologist embarked on a tour of Norway and Iceland with Gustav Biedermann Günther (1801-1866) German surgeon, during the years 1819-1820.
