    Head and shoulders portrait of William Hershel in left profile. Herschel’s new planet is shown in the upper left of the image, beyond the orbit of Saturn. In an oval frame.

    Inscribed ‘Herschel, Saturne. WILLIAM HERSCHEL Ne a Hanovre en 1738 qui a decouvert la nouvelle planete le 13 mars 1781. Dessine p. Mme Dupiery. Gravé. P. Thoenert.’ And pencilled ‘1781’.

    William Herschel was a British astronomer, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1781 the same year he was awarded the Copley Medal.
