Kew Observatory was maintained by the Royal Society for astronomical and magnetic observation. It became a centre for solar observation, with extended observation of sunspot activity by Warren de la Rue FRS, one of the pioneers of astronomical photography.
Warren de la Rue (1815-1889) was a British astronomer and chemist he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1850.
