Description
Three-quarter length seated portrait showing Martin Folkes seated in the president’s chair surmounted with the Royal Society crest. He holds a tricorne hat in his right hand and rests his left hand on a copy of the statutes of the Royal Society. The top of the ceremonial mace can be seen behind the statutes.

Martin Folkes (1690-1754), British antiquary and natural philosopher, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1714 at the age of 23. He served as President from 1741-1752.
