Description
Ornithological study of the Pin-tailed sandgrouse Pterocles alchata, side view, shown in a natural setting.
Plate from Onomasticon zoicon, plerorumque animalum differentias & nomina propria…., by Walter Charleton, (London, James Allestry, 1668), pp.76/77. The plate is inscribed above: ‘pag 77 Alchata’.
The accompanying text states that the bird is: ‘a small wild Pidgeon, in the colour of his Feathers resembling a Partridge, frequent about Montpelier in France’.
Walter Charleton (1620-1707), British physician and natural philosopher, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1661.
