    Two zoological studies of European small mammals. Figure 1 (above) shows the Weasel, Mustela nivalis. Figure 2 (below) shows the Stoat, Mustela ermine, in its ermine winter coat.

    Plate 29 from the book Histoire naturelle, généralle et particuliére, avec la description du Cabinet du Roi, by Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon and Louis Jean Marie Daubenton, volume 7, (Paris, 1758).

    The plate is inscribed above: ‘LA BELETTE. Tom VIII Pl.XXIX. pag.248.’ Inscribed below: ‘L’HERMINE. Buveé l’Ameriquain delin. M. Aubert sculp.’

    Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon (1707-1788), French naturalist and man of science, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1740.

    Louis Jean Marie Daubenton (1716-1800), French naturalist and encyclopaedist, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1755.
