Description
Four specimens of red marl containing plant and shell fossils, from Castle Hill in East Sussex, England.
Plate 8 from the book The fossils of the South Downs; or illustrations of the geology of Sussex, by Gideon Algernon Mantell (London, Lupton Relfe, 1822).
Inscribed above ‘Tab VIII’. Inscribed below: ‘Mary Ann Mantell Sculpt.’
The accompanying text states that: ‘Specimens of red marl from the Plastic clay beds at Castle Hill, containing the remains and impressions of the foliage of unknown vegetables, allied to the Platanus orientalis; and casts of shells of the genera Cerithum, Cyclas, and Unio.’
Gideon Algernon Mantell (1790-1852) surgeon and geologist was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1825.
