    Head and shoulders portrait of Jean Antoine Claude Chaptal facing forward and looking out to viewer. He wears jacket with braid detail and decorated with medals, and has fur draped around his shoulders. In an oval frame.

    Inscribed ‘Dessiné d’après le tableau de Gros et gravé par Ambroise Tardieu. JEAN ANTOINE CHAPTAL COMTE DE CHANTELOUP, (Chimiste,). Membre de ‘Académie des Sciences, Pair de France etc. Né à Nosaret (Dept. de la Lozére) le 5 Juin, 1756’ and pencilled ‘Died 1832’.

    Jean Antoine Claude Chaptal was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1825.
