Description
Head and shoulders portrait of William Cockburn turned to the right and looking back to viewer. He has full length wig and is dressed in gown and lace cravat. Oval in a rectangular frame with a plaque with three cockerels [?] below.
Inscribed ‘R. White delin & sculp. Guliclmus Cockburn M.D.’ and pencilled ‘1696.’
William Cockburn (1669-1739) was a British physician to the fleet, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1696 and was on the Council between 1703 until 1709.
