Half-length portrait of Astley Cooper seated and inclined to the right as viewed and looking out to viewer. He wears regency-style clothes and rests his right arm on a pile of books.
Inscribed ‘Sir Astley Cooper Bart. F.R.S.’ on separate paper pasted on paper support and pencilled ‘1802’.
Astley Paston Cooper, 1st Baronet (1768-1841) was a British surgeon and anatomist, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1802.
