Description
Head and shoulders portrait of Godfrey Copley inclined to the left and looking back over to the right as viewed. He wears full periwig and robes with lace cravat. In an oval frame.
Inscribed ‘I:Kneller pinx: I:Smith fecit’ and pencilled ‘1694 Sir G Copley’.
Godfrey Copley (1653 ? – 1709) was a British landowner and art collector he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1691 and served on the council between 1692-1708. He bequeathed a sum of money to the Royal Society, which was used to found the Copley Medal.
