Description
Head and shoulders portrait of John Denham inclined to the right as viewed and wearing long periwig, falling collar and a medallion on a ribbon. Oval in a rectangular frame and decorated with laurel and ribbon above.
Inscribed ‘SIR JOHN DENHAM. From an original Picture in the Collection of Lord Chesterfield. Cook sc' and pencilled ‘1663’.
Sir John Denham (1615-1669) was a British poet, he was an original Fellow of the Royal Society, elected in 1663.
