Description
Half-length seated portrait of Henri Justel in profile, looking to the right as viewed. He is shown sitting on an armchair, before a bookcase with drawers. Above, a curtain or tasselled drape. On a covered table in front of the sitter is an inkwell and feather pen. Justel’s left hand rests on a paper and there is a pocket watch by this.
A version of this portrait appeared as a plate 1 in The Gentleman’s Magazine, v.58 part 1, March 1788. The accompanying text within the article ‘Brief memoirs of Dr. H. De Justel’, states that ‘His portrait and family arms are here given, from private plates engraved in his lifetime’.
Inscribed below in pencil: ‘1681. Henry de Justel. 1/-‘.
Henri Justel (1620-1693) French Librarian and Huguenot refugee to Britain was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1681.
