    Allegorical scene showing a winged figure swathed in clouds above the Earth and the Moon, with the Sun behind. The constellations of Libra, Scorpio and Centaurus are also shown.

    Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon (1707-1788), French naturalist and man of science, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1740.
