    Description
Zoological studies of two fishes: the Ruffe Gymnocephalus cernua (here classified as Acerina cernua) and the European bullhead Cottus gobio. Both freshwater fishes are shown caught and displayed on a riverbank, with a mill waterwheel in the background.

Plate 2 from the book British fresh-water fishes by W. Houghton, vol.1 (London, William Mackenzie, 1879).

The plate is inscribed below: ‘RUFFE AND MILLER’S THUMB.’

The accompanying text states that: ‘The specimen [of Ruffe] from which the illustration was made was supplied by Mr. Masefield, of Ellerton Hall, and was taken from a canal in November, 1877.’

William Houghton (1828-1895) British naturalist and clergyman, was a Fellow of the Linnean Society.
