Description
Zoological studies of two fishes: the Crucian carp Carassius carassius and the Prussian carp Carassius gibelio. Both freshwater fishes are shown in side views caught and displayed on a lakeside.
Plate 5 from the book British fresh-water fishes by W. Houghton, vol.1 (London, William Mackenzie, 1879).
The plate is inscribed below: ‘GRECIAN CARP. PRUSSIAN CARP.’
The accompanying text states that: ‘The specimen [of Crucian carp] figured was supplied by Mr. Masefield, of Ellerton Hall.’
William Houghton (1828-1895) British naturalist and clergyman, was a Fellow of the Linnean Society.
