    Zoological studies of four fishes: the Spined loach Cobitis taenia; the Common minnow Phoxinus phoxinus (here styled Leuciscus phoxinus); the Stone loach Barbatula barbatula (here styled Nemachilus barbatulus); and the Bleak Alburnus alburnus. Side views of each fish, presented on grassy ground before water.

    The plate is inscribed below: ‘SPINED LOACH. MINNOW. LOACH. BLEAK.’

    The accompanying text states that: ‘The Bleak…specimen was taken from the Thames at Oxford.’

    William Houghton (1828-1895) British naturalist and clergyman, was a Fellow of the Linnean Society.
