Front section of a brick-lined laboratory furnace, showing the interior.

Plate 5 from the book Histoire naturelle, généralle et particuliére…Nouvelle edition, by Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon and C.S. Sonnini, volume 5 (Paris 1799).

Inscribed above: ‘Planche V.’ The print has a key to the main working elements of the furnace, labelled A-M, and below, ‘Echelle de Six Pieds’ (scale of six feet).

The accompanying text states that: ‘On jugera de la grandeur de chaque partie de ce fourneau, par les échelles qui sont au bas de chaques figures, qui ont été exactments levees sur le fourneau qui etoit au Jardin royal des plantes, par M. Gouffier.’ (The size of each part of this furnace will be judged by the scales at the bottom of every figure, which have been exactly based upon the furnace which was in the Royal Garden of Plants by M. Gouffier).

Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon (1707-1788), French naturalist and man of science, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1740.
