    Bust of Nicholas Copernicus shown face on, he has mid-length hair with a parted fringe.

    The base is inscribed ‘COPERNICUS’.

    Nicholas Copernicus (1473-1543) was a Polish mathematician and astronomer. He was not a Fellow of the Royal Society.
    Object history
    The sculpture was presented by the Polish Copernicus Committee (1943), in gratitude for the Royal Society’s assistance in the planning of celebratory events for the 400th anniversary of the death of Copernicus.

    Recorded in the Notes and Records of the Royal Society Volume 4, 1941-45, p.131, ‘GIFTS 1943. A plater cast of the bust of Copernicus was presented by the Copernicus Celebrations Committee.’
