    Description
    Bust of Hugh Falconer, head slightly inclined to the right as viewed and looking off to distance. In classical style with draped shoulders and natural mid-length curly hair in a side parting. On a round marble socle.

    Inscribed on the back ‘HUGH FALCONER F.R.S.’

    Hugh Falconer was a British physician, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1845 and served on the Council as Vice President from 1863-1864.

    Provenance: Presented by the Falconer Memorial Committee, 1866.

    The donation is recorded in the Royal Society’s Council Minutes: ‘Read the following letter from Dr. Charles Murchison, F.R.S.:-- 79 Wimpole Street, London, 6 June 1866. DEAR SIR, -- On the part of the Committee of the Falconer Memorial Fund I am authorized to offer for the acceptance of the Council of the Royal Society, the Bust of the late Dr. Hugh Falconer now in the Exhibition of the Royal Academy. I shall be glad to know when the Council decide whether or not they will accept this offer. I am, yours truly, CHARLES MURCHISON. Dr. Sharpey, Sec. Roy. Society. Resolved – That the Bust be accepted, and that thanks be returned to Dr. Murchson, the Committee, and the Subscribers to the Falconer Memorial Fund for their highly valued gift.’ Royal Society Minutes of Council, Printed, v.3 1858-69, meeting 28 June 1866, p.324.
