    Description
    Bust of Davies Gilbert facing forward, head and partial shoulders, in classical style with draped left shoulder as viewed.

    Recessed at the lowermost front and inscribed ‘DAVIES GILBERT PRES. R.S.’ and further inscription on the left hand side as viewed reads ‘WESTMACOTT, F.R.S.’

    Davies Gilbert was a British scientific administrator he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1791, served as Treasurer from 1819-1827 and was President from 1827-1830.

    Provenance: Presented by the Baroness Basset, 1844.

    The donation is recorded in the Royal Society’s Council Minutes ‘ The President reported that a Bust of the late Davies Gilbert, Esq. had been presented to the Society by the Baroness Basset, and that he had written to her ladyship, returning her thanks in the name of the Society.’ Royal Society Minutes of Council, Printed, v.1 18, meeting 14 March 1844, 1832-1846, p.445
