Inscribed on the back ‘PROFESSOR HENRY SMITH. J E Boehm Fecit 1883.’
Henry John Stephen Smith (1826-1883) was an Irish mathematician, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1861.

The donation is recorded in the Royal Society’s Council Minutes: ‘Read a letter from Professor Fowler, President of Corpus Christi College, Oxford, offering to the Society, on the part of the subscribers to the Henry Smith Memorial, a marble replica of the bust of that eminent mathematician and distinguished Fellow of the Royal Society. Resolved – That this offer be accepted with thanks.’ Royal Society Minutes of Council, Printed, v.6 1884-1892, meeting 19 February 1885, p.25.
