    Description
    Bust of William Spottiswode, head and partial shoulders. He is shown wearing a buttoned jacket and full beard.

    Inscribed ‘WILLIAM SPOTTISWOODE, 1864’ on the lower front and ‘T. WOOLNER Sc LONDON.’ lower left side as viewed.

    William Spottiswoode was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1853, he served as its President from 1878 to 1883.

    The donation is recorded in the Royal Society’s Council Minutes: ‘Resolved – That the best thanks of the Council be given to Messres, W. H. and C. Spottiswoode for the gift to the Society of a marble bust of their father, the late Mr. William Spottiswoode, P.R.S.’ Royal Society Minutes of Council, Printed, v.7 1892-1898, meeting 6 December 1894, p.136.
