Description
Three-quarter length portrait of John Peter Gassiot seated by a table. He wears a double-breasted jacket, a high collar shirt and has short, dark hair. His left hand is resting on a document headed ‘Unconfirmed Minutes for the use of the Members of the Council only. December 16th 1853.’ His legs are crossed and he faces slightly towards the right.

John Peter Gassiot (1797-1877), British merchant and physicist, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1840. He was awarded the Royal Medal in 1863 and delivered the Bakerian Lecture in 1858 on magnetic deflections of electrical discharges.
