Full-length portrait of Margaret Cavendish in three-quarter profile to the right as viewed. She wears a fine gown with a bonnet and tightly curled hair. In a classical setting with a Corinthian column and balustrade to the right and a richly decorated draped curtain to the left as viewed.

Margaret Cavendish, Duchess of Newcastle-upon-Tyne (1623-1673), English writer and philosopher, was the first woman to attend a meeting of the Royal Society in May 1667. She was not elected a Fellow of the Royal Society.
