Half-length portrait of Hugh Fortescue, seated and resting his right arm on the back of the chair. He wears regency-style clothing high-collared shirt with cravat. He has a pocket watch in his waistcoat pocket and has short hair with side-whiskers.

Hugh Fortescue, 2nd Earl Fortescue (1783-1861) British politician, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1817. He was styled Viscount Ebrington from 1789 to 1841.
