    Head and shoulders portrait of John Gillies turned to the right as viewed and looking back to viewer. He wears high-collared jacket with cravat.

    Inscribed ‘JOHN GILLIES, L.L.D. F.R.S.’ and pencilled ‘1789’ on paper support.

    John Gillies (1747-1836) British historian, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1789.
