Head and shoulders portrait of Stephen Hales inclined to the left and looking out to viewer. He wears medium length wig with cassock and bands. In an oval frame.
Inscribed ‘THE REVD. DR. STEPHEN HALES, F.R.S. AUTHOR OF VEGETABLE STATICS.’ Pencilled ‘1717’ on paper support.
Stephen Hales (1677-1761) British physiologist and inventor, elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1718 and served on the Council in 1727.
