    Description
    Half-length portrait of Johannes Hevelius in an interior with a bookcase to the right and draped curtain to the left as viewed. He has shoulder length hair and is dressed in a robe with chain detail around the neck. He holds a quill in his right hand, which is resting on an open book or journal.

    Inscribed ‘IOHANNES HEVELIUS Dantiscanus & c.Done from the Original Painting in ye Publ: Lib: att Oxford sold by Tho Bakewell next the Horn Tavern in Fleetstreet.’ Pencilled ‘1664’ on paper support.

    Johannes Hevelius (1611-1687) Polish astronomer, elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1664.
