Head and shoulders portrait of Christian Gottlob Heyne, head turned in three-quarter profile to the left as viewed. Oval in a rectangular frame surmounted by swags and upon a pedestal inscribed with the sitter’s name.
Inscribed ‘CHRISTIAN GOTTLIEB HEYNE. I.H.Tischbein pinx. C.G.Geiffer Sc.’ Pencilled ‘1789’ in the lower left hand corner.
Christian Gottlob Heyne (1729-1812) German classical scholar and archaeologist, elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1789.
