Description
Three-quarter length portrait of Gowin Knight seated and inclined to the left and looking out to viewer. He wears full-length periwig and is dressed in a long coat with deep cuffs, shirt with ruffled sleeves and neck cloth. A small table to his right as viewed with a piece of magnetised steel [?].
Inscribed ‘Painted and Etched by B. Wilson 1751. Gowin Knight M.B. F.R.S.’ Pencilled ‘1745’ on paper support.
Gowin Knight (1713-1772) British physicist, elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1745.
