Description
Rough sketch of a fossil detail identified by the artist as an ‘air bladder’, the swim bladder of a fish. With an unidentified structure above.
The drawing appears in a letter from Gideon Mantell to William Buckland, 15 June 1829. In the accompanying descriptive text, Mantell wrote: ‘The specimen is very imperfect & of no interest in other respects. I send fragments of the unknown body…What is it? The roe of the female?’
