Description
Rough sketch showing two views of the skull of the Dodo Raphus cucullatus, divided into sections.
The drawing appears in a letter from J S Duncan to William Buckland, 9 August 1830. Duncan was offering advice on how best to produce detailed drawings (on behalf of Georges Cuvier) of the Dodo specimen held by the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, and used these sketches to indicate what he considered would be ideal views of the bird’s head.
John Shute Duncan (1769-1844) British museum curator, Keeper of the Ashmolean Museum.
