Description
Rough sketch of a crocodile jawbone with teeth, for comparison with fossil specimens.
The drawing appears in a letter from Gideon Mantell to William Buckland, 23 October 1832, discussing fossil finds. In the accompanying descriptive text, Mantell wrote: ‘The annexed sketch will at once shew you that they are portions of the posterior extremity of the lower jaw of a saurian; perhaps a crocodile.’ The drawing is inscribed: ‘Lower jaw of Crocodile.’
