    Magnified black and white photograph of lunar sample from the USSR unmanned moon mission Luna 24, showing one grain of moon rock. Grains from sample number 24090, soil collected approximately 2m below the lunar surface.

    From the Colin Pillinger collection. Colin Trevor Pillinger CBE FRS (1943 - 2014) applied mass spectrometry analysis to lunar samples returned by the US Apollo missions and Russian Luna missions, and analysed meteorites. He was principle investigator for the Beagle 2 Mars lander, and played a leading role in the European Space Agency’s Rosetta mission which successfully landed the Philae lander on comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko.

    Colin Pillinger was elected Fellow of the Royal Society in 1993, receiving the Royal Society Michael Faraday Prize in 2012.
