Colour photographic slide of lunar sample collected by the unmanned USSR Luna moon sample-return missions.
From the Colin Pillinger collection. Colin Trevor Pillinger CBE FRS (1943 - 2014) applied mass spectrometry analysis to lunar samples returned by the US Apollo missions and Russian Luna missions, and analysed meteorites. He was Principle Investigator for the Beagle 2 Mars lander, and played a leading role in the European Space Agency’s Rosetta mission which successfully landed the Philae lander on comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko.
Colin Pillinger was elected Fellow of the Royal Society in 1993, receiving the Royal Society Michael Faraday Prize in 2012.
