    Description
Half-length portrait of Dame Jean Thomas, standing and facing the viewer, smiling, and with folded arms. The sitter is dressed in black velvet and wears a silver double-helix pendant on a chain. This motif is picked up by the artist as a discrete background element. To the right and left are magenta phalaenopsis orchids.

Dame Jean Olwen Thomas, British biochemist, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1986. She served on the Society's Council from 1990 to 1992 and as its Biological Secretary and Vice-President from 2008 to 2013, becoming the first woman to hold this title.
