    Head and shoulders portrait of Georges Louis Leclerc, Count of Buffon, inclined to the right and looking out to viewer. He wears a buckled wig and is dressed in fine clothes of embroidered waistcoat and braided jacket. In an oval frame with an illustration of a bird of prey below.

    Inscribed ‘J.Chapman sculpsit. G.L. LE CLERC, COMTE DE BUFFON. London Published as the Act directs: April 25th 1801 by J. Wilkes. Georges Louis Leclerc, Count of Buffon (1707-1788) French natural historian, elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1740.’
