Description
Head and shoulders portrait of Oronzio de’ Bernardi, half-turned to the right, as viewed. Wearing a short wig, the sitter’s coat is fastened with a single button. Presented in an oval frame.
Frontispiece to L'uomo galleggiante, o sia l'arte ragionata del nuoto; scoperta fisica [‘The floating man, or the reasoned art of swimming…], by Oronzio de’ Bernardi (Naples, 1794). The plate is inscribed below: ‘CANONICO ORONZIO DE’ BERNARDI. Franc. Lapegna dis. Nic. Fiorillo inc.’
Oronzio de’ Bernardi (1620-1707), Italian priest and author of a manual of swimming. Bernardi was not a Fellow of the Royal Society.
