Pavlov spent a period of his early career studying in the laboratory of Carl Ludwig, assisting with his research on the digestion of dogs. Carl Friedrich Wilhelm Ludwig (1816-1895) German physiologist was elected a Foreign Member of the Royal Society in 1875.
