                                Diagrammatic drawing of Prince Rupert's water-raising engine, after a 'hydrocontisterium novum' designed by Bonaventura Cavalieri (1598-1647), which was presented to the Royal Society on 22 July 1663. Robert Hooke provided the description which was ordered to be registered.

                                At the meeting of the Royal Society on 22 July 1663, ‘Prince Rupert’s water-raising engine after the method of Cavellerius’s hydrocontisterium novum, was ordered to be tried; and a description of it was given in by Mr. Hooke, which was ordered to be registered’ (Birch 1:285).
