Description
Drawing of human calculi on a loose, brown transparent paper. From a letter by Ralph Thoresby dated at Leeds, 5 July 1703. In the letter, Thorseby describes how these stones were excreted through the anus by a 14-year-old poor girl called 'Holllins'.
The first figure shows the smallest stone, three inches in diameter, smooth and bright on the outside, and of the colour of a 'full ripe hazel nut' with shadowed spots. The second figure is of the second stone, 4 1/2 inches in diameter, sawn through to show dark and white striations. The third and fourth figures are of the third stone, which was 5 1/2 inches in diameter. The fourth figure shows the triangular shape of the stone.
