Description
Observation by Heinrich Sivers (1626-1691) of the sunspots in August 1671 at Hamburg, enclosed in a letter by Martin Vogel/Fogel (1634-1675) to Henry Oldenburg dated 1 November 1671, Hamburg. This letter was read at the meeting of the Royal Society on 9 November 1671, and printed in Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, vol. 6, no. 78 (December 1671), with this figure.

Object history
At the meeting of the Royal Society on 9 November 1671, ‘A letter of Dr. Fogelius to Mr. Oldenburg, dated at Hamburgh 1 Novemb. 1671, was read, treating of the observations of the Solar spots returned (after they had passed the Sun’s hemisphere, that is hid from us) from August 26 to Sept. 5, O. S. inclusive; as also concerning some uncommon plants’ (Birch 2:489).
